YouTube’s Original Programming To Become Free For All Users On Sept. 24

YouTube previously announced plans to remove its original programming from behind the YouTube Premium paywall by 2020, but we now have a precise sense of timing, which is a tad earlier than expected.

All YouTube Originals will become free to watch (and supported by ads) on Sept.24, Techcrunch reports, citing an email that YouTube sent out to existing Premium subscribers. That said, Premium subscribers — who pay $12 per month — will be able to watch original content ad-free and download it for offline viewing. (All videos on YouTube are ad-free and available to download for Premium subscribers).

Additionally, Premium subscribers will gain access to full seasons right after they premiere, per Techcrunch, as opposed to having to wait for a gradual, weekly rollout. YouTube will also begin to produce and distribute Premium subscriber-only content — including director’s cuts and extra scenes. YouTube’s original programming is overseen by global content head Susanne Daniels (pictured above).

YouTube first announced its pivot toward free programming last November, amid reports that it was shifting funds away from premium, scripted projects.
