YouTube Plans To Majorly Expand San Bruno HQ Get Support From Local Council

YouTube has gotten support from San Bruno officials for its proposed headquarters expansion in San Bruno, Calif.

As it announced almost exactly one year ago, the company plans to majorly increase its current one million square feet of HQ to nearly 2.4 million. Now, we know that plan it’s proposed to the council indicates it intends to fill those new square feet with extra office space, as well as 1,000 units of housing, a hotel, underground parking lots, and a civic center, per a report from local outlet The Daily Journal.

The extra office space — three-story buildings with attached subterranean parking — will comprise 440,000 square feet of the total expansion. One crucial facet of the plan involves YouTube entirely subsuming nearby Bayhill Shopping Center, which already contains some YouTube operations.

All in all, the expansion will take more than 10 years to complete.

Councilwoman Laura Davis told The Daily Journal

she’s “happy with the direction it is going,” but noted that YouTube’s plans must include paths for bikers and walkers traveling from its housing units to work, and that as YouTube establishes a larger footprint in the city, it should continue to promote methods of transportation that aren’t personal cars.

Davis added that YouTube currently does well on the eco front by providing its employees with a shuttle service to work, and she hopes that with the development, YouTube will expand that service to not only bring employees to work, but also take them from its housing and campus to shop at local businesses.

While the council as a whole expressed support for the plans, it hasn’t officially approved what YouTube wants to do. No date has been selected for an official vote, but the council is set to reconvene in the fall to take another look at the proposal.
