The Westboro Baptist Church, a hate group that espouses anti-LGBTQ+, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, and other hateful views, accidentally endorsed a new album by gay artist and YouTube creator, Elijah Daniel.
In the tweet promoting Daniel’s album, the Westboro Baptist Church wrote, “Nearly daily the heart of some clever soul around the world is moved by the Creator of All Things to spread these Bible picket signs by some creative means.” The album is titled Gods Hates Lil Phag, which the Westboro group seems to have interpreted literally, thinking that Daniel’s views fit in with the group’s homophobic hate speech.
Of course, the endorsement prompted Daniel’s fans to inform the Westboro Baptist Church of their mistake.
Daniel himself weighed in.
Since then, the hashtag #WestboroLovesPhags
has been trending, and Daniel is making sure it stays that way by essentially trolling the hate group on Twitter.Last night, Daniel tweeted that the Westboro Baptist Church would be protesting his tour (which the hate group then retweeted). Daniel’s tour, which will also feature artist Dr. Woke, begins on August 25 in San Francisco, passing through Los Angeles, Houston, Orlando, Toronto, and more before ending on September 30 in Boston, Massachusetts. Tickets range from around $25 for general admission to $300 for the “Probably a Terrible Tattoo” VIP package.
Earlier this year, Daniel spoke out against anti-LGBTQ+ advertisements appearing on YouTube—during Pride Month, no less, and alongside LGBTQ+ creators’ videos. YouTube has since removed the offending ads.
