YouTube Premium Announces First Spanish-Language Slate With Gael García Bernal, Maluma, Sofia Niño de Rivera

After commencing its global rollout in June — with the addition of 12 countries, including Spain, to its lineup — YouTube Premium has announced its first-ever Spanish-language slate.

Forthcoming series and films will feature noted Mexican actor Gael García Bernal, singer Maluma (pictured above), and Mexican comedian Sofia Niño de Rivera. While YouTube was scant on details, the slate marks its first major non-English content push — though the company has previously dipped its toes into international productions that hail from the U.K. YouTube also said last week that it was readying original productions in Germany, Japan, Mexico, France, and India.

García Bernal is perhaps best known for his performances in The Motorcycle Diaries, Y Tu Mamá También, and Coco. Maluma, who hails from Colombia, has found enormous success on YouTube amid an explosion of Latin music on the platform. He counts 17 million subscribers worldwide and five videos that have cracked 1 billion views. Finally, Niño de Rivera is seen as a trailblazer for female comedians in the Latin world.

“We’re thrilled to continue expanding our YouTube Originals portfolio with new Spanish-language movies and series, and to be working with amazing global Latin artists,” said Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s global head of original content. “Latin America is a region filled with creative storytellers with unique voices, and we’re looking forward to working with them to bring their innovative brand of programming to YouTube fans around the world.”

YouTube Premium was slow to roll out due to stalled licensing deals with music labels and related rights holders, which it subsequently clinched last year. YouTube Premium is currently available in 16 countries: the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Austria, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and the U.K.
