YouTube Red, which has just been re-branded as YouTube Premium to incorporate the video giant’s brand new music subscription service, has given a second season order to another flagship series.
Hourlong dance drama Step Up: High Water, starring Naya Rivera and Faizon Love, will return for another 10-episode installment in 2019. The Lionsgate-produced show will film this fall in Atlanta. YouTube Premium, which is now priced at $12 per month, also recently announced the renewal of Cobra Kai, a Karate Kid series adaptation that arguably marks YouTube’s biggest breakout original to date.
The first episode of the first season of Step Up: High Water, which was inspired by the hit film franchise, generated over 22 million views, YouTube said. It follows ambitious dancers in a contemporary performing arts school in Atlanta. All season one series regulars, including Ne-Yo, Lauryn McClain, and Petrice Jones, will return for season two — as will creator, executive producer, and showrunner Holly Sorensen (Recovery Road). Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, who both co-starred in the original Step Up film, will also serve as EPs
“With Step Up: High Water, we wanted to create a dramatic series that reflects the world where the YouTube audience lives,” said Susanne Daniels, the company’s global head of original content. “It’s diverse, vibrant, and authentic. The energy from the talented teams in front of and behind the camera brought this dance drama to life and pulled viewers in right from the start.”
Season one is currently available in its entirely on the Step Up: High Water YouTube channel, which has 428,000 subscribers. Check out the announcement video for season two below:
