Watch Obama, Voiced By Jordan Peele, Warn Against Fake News In BuzzFeed Video

There’s currently a YouTube video circulating in which former President Barack Obama appears to call President Trump a “complete dipshit.”

However, these aren’t Obama’s words. Partway through the video, the screen splits to show that Jordan Peele is the person voicing the video aptly titled “You Won’t Believe What Obama Says In This Video! [winky face].” Savvy television and online video viewers will note in Comedy Central’s Key & Peele, the latter often impersonated the former president.

The “You Won’t Believe” video, which came out today on the BuzzFeed’s YouTube channel, was the brainchild of Peele and BuzzFeed’s CEO and founder Jonah Peretti. The idea was to raise awareness of false news reporting and teach viewers how effective video and audio manipulation can be in convincing people to believe someone has said something that they didn’t.

“We’re entering an era in which our enemies can make it look like anyone is saying anything at any point in time,” Peele says in the BuzzFeed video, synched up to Obama’s moving lips. He also says things like “Ben Carson

is in the sunken place,” a reference to Peele’s Oscar-winning movie Get Out.

Jared Sosa, a creative director at BuzzFeed, produced the video with Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, reported Variety. They used editing programs Adobe After Effects and Fakeapp (the latter infamous for its involvement in “deepfakes,” in which users edited celebrities and others’ faces into porn videos) to make it appear that Obama was speaking Peele’s monologue. The warning is especially pertinent considering recent news that officials from the United States and the United Kingdom have blamed the Russian government for global cyberattacks. A week ago, NBC News also reported on fake pornographic videos featuring “Hillary Clinton,” which were connected to Russia’s Internet Research Agency.
