A month after it premiered Final Space on TV, TBS is discussing the next steps it plans to take with its animated sci-fi series. The network is working with Final Space‘s creator, YouTube star Olan Rogers, on a pilot that could turn into a VR spinoff of the series.
According to Variety, which first reported on the new project, the pilot will join an augmented reality (AR) app that has already been launched as a Final Space tie-in. The VR spinoff will be an appeal to Rogers’ audience, who subscribe to him on platforms like YouTube. “His brand is built on the internet,” Engelman told Variety, speaking with regard to Rogers. “This is absolutely the kind of property to experiment with.”
Final Space, which follows the adventures of a bumbling astronaut named Gary Space, premiered back in February to mixed reviews. If nothing more, the VR pilot is a sign that TBS is still excited about the project it scooped up from a New Form pilot season back in 2016. They’ll be even more excited if Rogers’ fans prove receptive to the creator’s experimental new project.
