Indie Spotlight: The Witchy Web Series ‘Brujos’ Blends Fantasy With Relatable Characters

We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now. Read previous installments here.

Some web series are driven by strong ideas. Others focus on providing strong characters who can connect with audiences. For some creators, serving underrepresented audiences is a primary goal.

For Brujos, created by Ricardo Gamboa, all of these statements are true. Gamboa’s project is a bold, ambitious show that offers up complex heroes and places them within a supernatural situation. Its protagonists are gay, Latino witches who possess special powers thanks to their initiation into a cabalistic club. At the same time, they’re also grad students who must master political theory, navigate their respective personal relationships and romances, and fend off a group of white hunters who are looking to spill the blood of their coven.

The strength of Brujos is not just degree to which it presents complex, challenging characters, but also its compelling cinematography, which allows the lives it depicts to resonate brilliantly. This is a show that succeeds on all levels, and now is the perfect time to check it out: After four episodes launched last March, seven more are now available. Check out this witchy tale on its website.
