Pentatonix Members ‘Drop The Mic’ With Rap Battle Performance On TBS

The Christmas season is always an active time of year for the a cappella group Pentatonix, and this year, the group’s schedule included an appearance on TV. The melodious outfit dished out lyrical bombs in an episode of TBS‘ Drop The Mic, which pits celebrities against one another in rap battle-style verbal sparring matches.

On Drop The Mic, Pentatonix, which has more than 14 million subscribers on its official YouTube channel, went up against Bell Biv Devoe, the R&B group known for the hit song “Poison.” Pentatonix members Kirstie Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, Scott Hoying, and Kevin Olusola took turns trading barbs with the 90s icons. Bell Biv Devoe were ultimately declared as the battle’s victors, much to the chagrin of Pentatonix’s passionate fan base. Matt Sallee, who recently made his debut as the newest member of the vocal group

, did not appear on the show.

Pentatonix’s Drop The Mic throwdown comes during a busy stretch for the a cappella group. Their holiday special A Very Pentatonix Christmas aired last month on NBC, and Grassi and Hoying have released two EPs this year through their cooperative project Superfruit.

Drop The Mic is co-produced by James Corden and based off a segment from his Late Late Show. In that sense it’s similar to Carpool Karaoke, another Corden bit that has been extended into a serial show. The full-length version of that project premiered earlier this year on Apple Music.

New episodes of Drop The Mic air at 10:30 PM ET on Tuesdays on TBS.
