Hulu, Seizing An Opportunity, Temporarily Drops Price Of Its Basic Monthly Plan By $2

While Netflix raises its subscription fees, one of its main competitors is enacting a temporary price drop. As the fall TV season kicks into high gear, Hulu has temporarily reduced the cost of its basic plan to $5.99 per month.

The plan in question, which stands as Hulu’s most popular tier, is normally priced at $7.99 per month. It offers access to the platform’s library of original programming and licensed content and includes some commercials. A more expensive plan, priced at $11.99 per month, is commercial-free, while a $39.99 option launched earlier this year includes access to dozens of live TV channels.

The reduced price, which according to Variety will be available for new and returning subscribers until January 9, 2018, will take advantage of Hulu’s close relationship will the fall TV schedule. The platform is the exclusive SVOD home for many network and cable shows, and it also has more of its own originals coming around the bend in the near future. It recently released a trailer for Future Man

, an action-comedy from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg that will premiere in November.

Beyond the new deal it is offering consumers, Hulu has also promoted its service through a series of TV ads that star Anna Kendrick. These initiatives have helped Hulu take advantage of the momentum it has received from distributing mainstream hits like The Handmaid’s Tale, which was a big winner at September’s Emmy Awards. The second season of that show is currently in production and is expected to premiere at some point in 2018.
