Indie Spotlight: In ‘The Stand,’ Lemonade Is Serious Business

We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now. Read previous installments here.

Before the summer runs out, many Americans will pick up glasses of lemonade from stands run by entrepreneurial youngsters. If you’re not yet craving a tall glass of the sweet-and-sour drink, perhaps The Stand will whet your appetite. Daley Baker and Eli London‘s series, which they are releasing through their studio Bottom of the Basement, is a comedy about the small-time politics that arise when two man-children open a lemonade stand and compete for business against two adorable girls.

At the onset of The Stand, Don (Baker) and Eli (London) have established a modest operation. Their product, as they are quick to tell customers, is squeezed out of lemons that are sourced from Peru, but when two girls open up shop down the street, Don and Eli’s message about the quality of their ingredients begin to fall on deaf ears. Seeking to claim their territory, our two protagonists take action against their economical adversaries in over-the-top fashion.

The Stand is somewhat low-brow and very much low-budget, but it works because Baker and London commit to their wacky characters, who are both laser focused on their goals and far too good at alienating potential customers. As with lemonade, great comedy doesn’t have to be complex, and The Stand lands enough jokes to make it worth your time.
