YouTube Reportedly Testing Video Playback Speed Controls In Mobile App

On desktop devices, YouTube users can adjust the speed at which videos play. You can make them run half as fast as normal to make sure you hang onto every word, or speed them up twice as fast as normal to turn them into giddy insanity.

Now, the world’s top video site may be considering a similar feature on its mobile apps. A 9 to 5 Google

reporter noticed he had the ability to control playback speed within YouTube’s Android app, though none of his coworkers perceived any change.

The 9 to 5 Google reporter found the playback speed option by tapping the three vertical dots in the upper right-hand corner of the app. From there, he had the option to slow his active video down or speed it up, as he showed in images shared in his article.

YouTube tests out many small updates like this one on small subsets of its user base, and 9 to 5 Google‘s discovery does not guarantee that playback speed controls will come to the video site’s apps. If YouTube does implement such a feature, however, it would probably be as much fun on mobile devices as it is on desktops. To see what I mean, go to the desktop version of YouTube, find your favorite slow song, change the playback speed to 1.25x or 1.5x, and witness that composition in an entirely new light. Trust me, it’s worth it.
