YouTube To Shelve Its Free Video Editor And Photo Slideshow Creator

YouTube is getting rid of two apparently little-used editing tools, community manager Marissa Morrill announced yesterday: its free, proprietary Video Editor and its photo slideshow creator. The tools won’t be obsolete until September 20 — so users will have several months to download or finish any current projects within the Video Editor. Videos that have already been published via the Editor will not be affected.

“We’ve seen limited usage of these features, so we’re retiring them to focus our efforts on building new tools and improving on other existing features,” Morrill wrote in the YouTube Help Forum

. Most creators on YouTube utilize more sophisticated, third-party editing software, including Adobe Premiere Pro and Apple Final Cut Pro.

That said, YouTube is keeping its Enhancements video editing features, which allow users to make slight tweaks to uploaded videos without impacting a clip’s URL, view count, and comments. Edits offered by Enhancements — located within the Video Manager page — include: trimming, blurring, filters, end screens, cards, subtitles, sound effects, contrast, slow motion, and saturation.
