Roku Announces 15 Million Monthly Active Accounts, 7 Billion Hours Streamed In 2017

As of today, 15-year-old Roku reaches 15 million monthly active accounts, the streaming device and smart TV manufacturer announced — marking 43% year-over-year user growth. All told, those accounts streamed roughly 7 billion hours of content in the first half of 2017, marking 61% growth over total hours streamed during the first half of 2016.

“Roku is the no. 1 TV streaming platform in the United States as measured by total hours streamed,” said founder and CEO Anthony Wood. “We are growing our active accounts by distributing our proprietary TV OS across a broad range of streaming devices with multiple price points and many new and highly rated Roku TV models from our TV brand partners.”

Roku devices are available in 10 countries — though they were recently banned in Mexico

due to widespread piracy. The company offers 5,000 streaming channels and access to 500,000 movies and TV episodes. Last year, competitors including Google Chromecast and Apple TV counted 30.6 million U.S. users and 20.5 million U.S. users, respectively, Techcrunch reports.

While it now counts 15 million account holders — after announcing 13 million total accounts as of December 2016 — these figures aren’t necessarily a reflection of total Roku devices sold, Variety notes. Roku stopped releasing device sales metrics after shifting its strategy from exclusively vending proprietary machines to incorporating its platform into smart TVs made my third-party manufacturers.
