More than a decade after its launch, Funny or Die remains one of the best places to find online videos led by celebrities. The latest two notables to show up on the digital comedy platform are Senator Al Franken and former late night host David Letterman, who discuss climate change with one another in the six-episode web series Boiling The Frog.
Boiling The Frog features conversations between its two leading men, with much of the series taking place inside the Senator’s office. Franken, a Democrat from Minnesota, is an outspoken advocate of climate science. Here, his language lines up with the point-of-view of the Showtime documentary series Years of Living Dangerously, which worked with Funny or Die to produce Boiling The Frog.
Funny or Die has famously featured then-President Barack Obama in a 2014 episode of the web series gotten political in the past. The platform Between Two Ferns. Two years later, Hillary Clinton took a turn trading insults with Ferns host Zach Galifianakis in the midst of her 2016 campaign.
Franken, who spent more than a decade as a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live before turning his focus to Washington, seems like he would be the perfect politician to land in a Funny or Die series. That said, Boiling The Frog is a bit dry and seems more interested in conveying its message than cracking jokes. At the very least, the show is an opportunity to see how much Letterman’s post-TV beard has grown in recent months. Spoiler alert: Very much.
