BuzzFeed Launches ‘Queer Prom’ Web Series Featuring Appearance By Superfruit

After hosting an inaugural Queer Prom event at its Hollywood studio last month, BuzzFeed has launched a companion docuseries about the event, which served to challenge gender norms surrounding prom dates, and to provide an inclusive atmosphere for LGBTQ+ high schoolers.

The five-part series, which premiered yesterday on YouTube, chronicles the event through the eyes of eight high school seniors, and features appearances from celebrity guests Evan Rachel Wood, Adam Lambert, Superfruit duo Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying, and Lauren Meister, the mayor of West Hollywood. Eugene Lee, one of BuzzFeed’s Try Guys, served as executive producer and host.

“At prom, where you’re traditionally expected to bring a date of the opposite sex and act according to your assigned gender, the pressure to assimilate in such a public space is yet another potential roadblock in a young queer person’s coming out journey,” Yang said of the event and series. “Our hope is to show viewers around the world who might be struggling with their identity that it’s absolutely okay to be queer and, for even just a single night, it’s also perfectly normal.”

New episodes of Queer Prom will debut on BuzzFeed’s YouTube page every day through June 12, coinciding with L.A. Pride Week. Episodes will follow the eight members of the Prom Court — who were chosen from thousands of video submissions sent in by high schoolers across the nation — as they arrive in Los Angeles, receive makeovers, and then dance the night away.
