Ellen DeGeneres Will Bring First Stand-Up Special In 15 Years To Netflix

In the time since she last recorded a stand-up special, Ellen DeGeneres has become a daytime TV queen, has dominated online video platforms like YouTube, and has even launched a digital destination of her own, ellentube. Now, she is planning a new set of jokes, and she will bring them to Netflix. The streaming service has announced a deal with DeGeneres that will result in a new special to be released at an undisclosed date.

One of the first groups to learn about the deal was DeGeneres’ 68.7 million Twitter followers, who were notified of the agreement when the comedian tweeted a response to a question posed by Netflix. The streamer sent out official confirmation of the pact shortly thereafter.

“It has been 15 years since I did a stand-up special. 15 years,” said DeGeneres

. “And I’m writing it now, I can’t wait. I’ll keep you posted when and where I’m gonna shoot my Netflix special. I’m excited to do it; I’m excited for you to see it.”

DeGeneres will become the latest high-profile funnyperson to make her stand-up return through the subscription video on demand industry leader. Notably, Dave Chappelle ended his own hiatus with a pair of specials that have become Netflix’s most-viewed live comedy offerings so far.

Financial details of the deal between Netflix and DeGeneres were not disclosed. Deadline surmised that, given the terms of the agreements Netflix has made with other comedians of DeGeneres’ caliber, the streamer likely shelled out multiple millions for the Ellen Show host’s services.
