Crackle, Sony’s ad-supported streaming service, announced today at the Upfronts that it’s developing two scripted dramas executive produced by Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson. At the same time, Crackle announced the launch of a weekly highlights show starring Smosh co-founder Ian Hecox.
Hecox’s show, called This Week On and debuting in May, will appear on a newly-launched Crackle vertical called Spotlight, according to the company, joining existing verticals Fandom, Comedy, Action, and Drama. This Week On will showcase new content arriving on the platform each week. Meanwhile, Jackson is teaming with Crackle on The Oath, about a secret law enforcement society, and RPM, about a Boston getaway driver.
At its Upfront, Crackle also announced that several favorite series were set to return, including its most-streamed scripted original to date, Snatch, which is coming back for a second season in 2018. Also coming back for a second season is the Adam Brody-starring Startup, arriving September 28, while Supermansion, a stop motion-animated comedy created by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios
and executive produced by Bryan Cranston, will unveil its third season next year.Finally, Crackle revealed other projects currently in the works, including a feature film called In The Cloud about a tech company that can upload a person’s consciousness and memories to a virtual space. Series in development include: Accident Park, about a man who purchase a dangerous local theme park; Tribes, about a nano-virus that has ravaged the West Coast; and The Row, about death row inmates who are sent on an experimental mission.
Crackle is announcing its new slate as flagship series Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, which ran on the platform for nine seasons, is moving to Netflix as part of a larger stand-up special deal with host Jerry Seinfeld.
