YouTube TV may be a long-term bet for the world’s biggest video company, though, at just one week old, it looks to be off to a promising start.
The app has been downloaded by 147,300 smartphone and tablet consumers, reports AdWeek, citing data from mobile analytics firm Apptopia. Most YouTube TV users thus far — to the tune of 73% — have downloaded the app from the Google Play store. On the Apple App Store charts, YouTube TV currently sits at 60th place in the ‘Free’ section.
For comparison’s sake, AdWeek notes, two-year-old skinny bundle progenitor Sling TV, from Dish Network, counts between 1 million and 2 million subscribers.
YouTube TV was announced in February and officially bowed in select markets on April 5. Priced at $35 per month, it is currently available in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia — with users receiving month-long free trials at signup. Though one of the standout features of the digital TV service is a cloud-based DVR with unlimited storage, it recently came to light that viewers won’t be able to fast-forward through commercials on certain pre-recorded shows.
