Periscope Takes Subtle Swipe At President Trump’s Immigration Ban

The Twitter-owned livestreaming app Periscope is taking a subtle stance against an executive order signed by President Donald Trump over the weekend that would temporarily ban immigration to the United States from seven Muslim-majority countries. On the loading screen for the Periscope app, a message now reads “Proudly made in America by immigrants.”

The executive order “has forced us to consider a disturbing alternate reality in which the Periscope team is irreparably changed,” wrote co-founders Joe Bernstein and Kayvon Beykpour in a blog post. “Periscope is built, maintained, and operated by people from many faiths and countries. Without immigrants and refugees, Periscope would not exist. For this reason, we are updating the Periscope loading screen.”

Bernstein and Beykpour also say that Periscope will continue to serve as a powerful and impartial tool for people all across the world to share their unfiltered truths.

And Periscope is far from the only tech company to voice its objection the ban, which resulted in massive protests across the country over the weekend. While Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted a message expressing his concern, Google CEO Sundar Pichai did the same in a memo to employees. In a Facebook post, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings called the ban “so un-American it pains us all,” and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey echoed these sentiments, tweeting that the “humanitarian and economic impact is real and upsetting.”
