Tumblr is bringing stickers and filters — two features that have besieged most of today’s popular social platforms largely thanks to Snapchat and Instagram, respectively — to its iOS and Android apps. The company announced today that over 100 stickers — including images of cats, pizza, sunglasses, and more — can now be added to photo and GIF posts.
Stickers can be added by clicking an icon that will now appear at the bottom of photo or GIF posts. And Tumblr’s iMessage app for iPhone can also create GIFs adorned with stickers — which can then be texted to phone contacts. Tumblr told Techcrunch that it plans to add new permanent and limited-edition stickers every month — with Valentine’s Day- and Black History Month-themed options arriving in February.
As for filters? “We threw in a few filters,” the company wrote. “They’re intense. Tap the magic wand and enjoy.” Techcrunch adds that as opposed to Instagram-like filters, which subtly serve to enhance and alter photo quality, Tumblr’s filters are bright and bold, yielding pop art-like imagery.
Other new features announced by Tumblr in recent months include live video streaming, which it announced last June, as well as a revenue sharing partner program. In May, Tumblr kicked off a so-called Labs experiment asking users to help it pilot potential new features.
