On a day when many digital media outlets had their eyes trained on the Inauguration of President Donald Trump, his predecessor, President Barack Obama, opted to launch a new website, obama.org, and detailed his future plans for a new Presidential Center in a YouTube video alongside his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama.
The video quickly catapulted to the top of YouTube’s ‘Trending’ tab
— toppling all other Inauguration coverage on the streaming platform.“The [Obama Presidential Center] will be based on the South Side of Chicago,” President Obama explained of the new venture, “but it will have projects all over the city, the country, and the world. More than a library or a museum, it will be a living, working center for citizenship. That’s why we want to hear from you. Tell us what you want this project to be.” Viewers are asked to send suggestions, via the new website, about the kinds of initiatives that they’d like to see the Center undertake.
In addition to the announcement video, the Obama Foundation posted another poignant video to its YouTube channel this afternoon titled Pass The Mic. That clip features a young child picking up the microphone that President Obama dropped in a viral moment during last year’s White House Correspondents Dinner, and presumably using her own voice to forge a better future.
