Christina Grimmie’s Family Files Wrongful Death Suit Against Orlando Concert Venue

The family of Christina Grimmie, a budding YouTube musician who was tragically killed at a meet-and-greet in Florida on June 10, have filed a lawsuit against touring company AEG Live as well as The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra Plaza Foundation — which owns Plaza Live, the venue where the fateful event was held. The event’s security company was also named in the suit, which alleged wrongful death and negligent infliction of emotional stress, according to Billboard.

The suit notes that the aforementioned parties “failed to take adequate security measures to ensure the safety of the performers and the attendees at the concert venue” and that only “superficial bag checks” were performed, Billboard reports. The suit also notes that the theater’s general manager had been fired nine days prior to the incident and replaced with a new manager whose experience was therefore extremely limited.

Grimmie’s assailant arrived at the theater with two handguns, two magazines of bullets, and a hunting knife, which the suit claims could have been detected with body pat-downs or metal detectors.

Given that Grimmie’s parents uprooted their lives to Los Angeles to support their daughter’s career, and her brother, Marcus, worked as her road and co-tour manager, the family is requesting projected income after taxes that the 22-year-old would have earned had she lived a full life. They are also requesting compensation for medical and funeral expenses, and damages for emotional suffering

While no response from the other parties has been made yet and no dates have been set for a hearing, the Grimmies have requested a jury trial, according to Billboard.
