Casey Neistat And Jesse Wellens Are Making A (Samsung-Branded) Christmas Movie

Two top-tier YouTube stars, both of whom have opted to take a break from the daily vlogging grind to focus on larger projects in recent months, are partnering together to film an ambitious holiday movie. Casey Neistat, who just sold his tech company Beme to CNN for a reported $25 million, and Jesse Wellens, who announced his own break from vlogging after splitting from girlfriend and fellow creator Jeana Smith in May, are collaborating on a sponsored film for Samsung.

Neistat and Wellens announced the project on their respective channels yesterday. And while both remained mum on details, the endeavor looks to involve some rather impressive kite surfing feats.

Last week, Samsung announced that it would host a holiday-themed VR experience called The Night Before, in which passersby in Los Angeles and New York are invited to partake in a Samsung Gear VR-powered sleigh ride beginning today at The Grove and in Herald Square. Both guys showcased the VR experience in their vlogs, and it’s possible that the forthcoming film is part of a larger holiday-themed Samsung initiative.

Both Neistat and Wellens have made enormous waves within the digital realm in recent weeks. In a bid to move beyond daily vlogs and prank videos, Wellens recently signed with Hollywood talent agency WME.

For his part, in a recent vlog titled I Miss Vlogging, Neistat shared that his decision to move on from the daily grind has been bittersweet — though he says he is elated to have a renewed sense of self. Neistat also shed a bit more light on the much-ballyhooed Beme deal. Beme is a software development company whose reach extends far beyond its first app, Neistat said, which ultimately faltered in the face of Snapchat. That said, “This was expressly not an acqui-hire,” he said of the deal. The entire Beme team will remain on board, and “we have the total freedom to create whatever we want to create,” Neistat said.
