Project Greenlight Seeks LGBTQ Web Series With ‘See Yourself’ Contest

For its next web series contest, Project Greenlight Digital Studios (PGLDS) is turning to the LGBTQ community. The company known for producing the HBO series Project Greenlight has teamed up with LGBTQ-friendly video platform Section II and GLAAD for See Yourself, a filmmaking competition that will award a development deal to its winning web series.

According to a press release issued by PGLDS, the goal of See Yourself is to combat the scant number of queer characters in major Hollywood films and on top broadcast TV networks. Beginning on August 2nd, contestants will be able to send in 1-2 minute pitches for their LGBTQ-oriented web series. The resulting submission pool will be whittled down to a semifinal field of 25 projects, from which the five finalists will be chosen. Ultimately, the winning series will receive $5,000 as well as funding, production assistance, and distribution from PGLDS and Section II.

See Yourself is PGLDS’ latest attempt to give new opportunities to groups that are commonly under-represented in media. The studio previously selected #Josh, a web series from a pair of Haitian-American creators, as the winner of its Get The Greenlight contest. It has also worked with Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl creator Issa Rae and her minority-friendly initiative Color Creative for a writing competition called New Normal.

“Our goal at PGLDS has always been to create opportunities for independent filmmakers and under-represented voices in the filmmaking community,” said Brittany Turner, the VP of Digital Video at PGLDS founder Adaptive Studios, in the press release. “We are thrilled to team up with both Section II and GLAAD to help expand this effort to the LGBTQ community.”

Official rules for See Yourself can be found on the PGLDS website.
