Mashable Goes To The Movies With Acquisition Of CineFix

As part of its plan to produce more video content, Mashable has announced a new acquisition. The publication has picked up CineFix, a channel known for producing videos and web series related to film.

Under previous owner Whalerock Industries, CineFix became one of the most significant destinations for film buffs on YouTube. Its slate of web series includes Homemade Movies, which features DIY recreations of famous scenes, and Film School’d, which explains cinema history through time-lapse whiteboard drawings. Thanks to the popularity of these and other shows, CineFix has built up an audience of more than 1.6 million subscribers.

Mashable already had a distribution deal in place with CineFix, and the acquisition will allow the former company to further integrate its new property into its offerings. Existing Mashable programs related to film, such as Trailer Mix and DIY Costume Squad, will be distributed through CineFix. Beyond those productions, Mashable will also produce branded content for its new channel through its studio wing.

“CineFix is a natural fit with Mashable’s focus on entertainment, technology, and influential geek culture. We’re excited to expand the loyal and dedicated community that CineFix has created since its inception in 2012,” said Mashable CCO Gregory Gittrich in a press release. “Mashable Studios will provide more production resources and distribution to CineFix to support its already successful slate of series.”

Video has been a major focal point for Mashable in 2016. In March, the publication announced a $15 million funding round led by Turner and earmarked a large portion of that money for video production. It also recently announced deals with Telemundo, Bravo, and Facebook Live.

Financial terms of Mashable’s CineFix acquisition were not revealed.
