After a gradual rollout beginning with celebrities, verified accounts and subsequently all U.S. iPhone users in late January 2016, Facebook is now making its live streaming product, Live, available on all Android devices nationwide. The feature will be be available within a week’s time, Facebook wrote in a blog post announcing the expansion. At the same time, Facebook said that Live would arrive via iOS in 30 different countries.
“We’ve seen that, on average, people watch a live video more than three times longer when it is live compared to when it is not live,” the company wrote. And the move to Android is particularly timely, given that 50 percent of its live video viewing audience is doing so from an Android device.
To initiate a stream, users simply tap the ‘What’s on your mind?’ box at the top of their News Feeds and then click the Live icon. Broadcasters can respond to comments in real time, and viewers can Subscribe for future events. Broadcasts then live on Timelines indefinitely like any other video.
