Netflix To Distribute French Documentary ‘Je Suis Charlie’

Netflix is adding another foreign title to its library. The streaming video platform will distribute the French documentary film Je Suis Charlie, thanks to a licensing deal with European arthouse sales company Pyramide International.

Directed by father-and-son duo Daniel and Emmanuel Leconte, Je Suis Charlie

recounts the terrorist attack on the Charlie Hebdo magazine offices in Paris in early 2015. The Leconte team, who were close friends with cartoonists who were killed in the attack, provide several first-hand accounts about the incident, expert interviews about what led to the tragedy, and even archival footage of Charlie Hebdo editor-in-chief Charb and deceased cartoonist Cabu, who drew the prophet Muhammed on a 2006 cover of the magazine. Netflix will start streaming Je Suis Charlie on January 7, 2016, on the first anniversary of the attack. Variety originally reported the story.

Over the last few months, Netflix has worked to add more documentary-style titles for the platform’s subscribers to enjoy. Back in March 2015, the streaming service partnered with  Leonardo DiCaprio to distribute projects created under the actor’s Appian Way documentary production house. Netflix also has a few documentary series currently streaming or in the works, including Making a Murderer and the eight-part nature series Our Planet from the creators of the hit series Planet Earth.

You can watch Je Suis Charlie on Netflix starting January 7.
