CONtv Will Release Its First Feature-Length Film On March 31

CONtv just launched earlier this month, but the convention and pop culture-focused streaming network already has a big piece of content planned. The Cinedigm and Wizard World-owned platform will release its first feature-length film, Mythica: A Quest for Heroes, on March 31, 2015.

Mythica: A Quest for Heroes is the first flick in a larger epic trilogy. The film tells the story of Marek (played by Survivor’s Melanie Stone), an escaped servant who learns to develop her unique powers through her wizard mentor Gojun (acted by fan-favorite Kevin Sorbo of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Andromeda). After her sister Teela (Dawn of the Dragonslayer’s Nicola Posener) is kidnapped by an ogre, Marek gathers a motley gang of adventurers to help her rescue her sister from captivity.

The first Mythica film is directed by Anne K. Black (The Crown and the Dragon), who told Yahoo Finance the female-driven story is “compelling and unique” in a world of male-dominated fantasy stories. Mythica is produced by Arrowstorm Entertainment, which originally hosted a Kickstarter in May 2014 to get Mythica off the ground. The production house received almost $100,000 from supporters.

Mythica captures the thrill of the role-playing game experience: forming an underdog team of disparate heroes to win fortune and glory,” said Arrowstorm’s Kynan Griffin

to Yahoo Finance. “It was made by true fans, for true fans. Fan support from the Kickstarter campaign is a crucial driving force in the creation and success of the Mythica franchise.”

“As an epic fantasy movie series, Mythica follows the tradition of Lord of the Rings, Narnia, and Harry Potter,” added Arrowstorm’s Jason Faller. “The [Hollywood] studios have run out of fantasy blockbusters, and Mythica was made to keep fantasy thriving across the globe.”

“As this skillfully created, sweeping fantasy epic touches on the myths and legends that appear in some of the most popular role playing games, comics, video games, and more, Mythica is the perfect choice as CONtv’s first original feature film,” explained CONtv’s EVP and GM Erick Opeka. “Everyone who served in the creation of the film are true fans of the genre, and we know that the Mythica trilogy will absolutely resonate with discriminating CONtv users.”

No release date has been announced for the two sequels Mythica: Darkspore and Mythica: The Necromancer as of yet. However, Yahoo Finance notes the movies should be available exclusively on CONtv later in 2015.
