Uproxx Debuts Satirical Daily News Show ‘The Desk’

Uproxx is getting in on the recent trend of digital news programs, albeit in a slightly more amusing way. The Woven Digital-owned media property launched a satirical daily news show dubbed The Desk on March 16, 2015.

The Desk’s episodes incorporate sarcastic humor into discussions of popular web and pop culture topics; down the line, Uproxx will also bring on guests and celebrities. The show’s three-to-five-minute episodes are filmed at 12 PM PST/3 PM EST at Woven Studios’ Culver City space. The Desk episodes first air on Uproxx.com and are then uploaded to the property’s YouTube channel later in the day.

In the premiere episode of The Desk, viewers are introduced to co-anchors Tom Storey and AJ Sovani. The caustic yet poignant social commentary begins immediately, as Sovani’s title says “female news anchor” while Storey’s merely says “news anchor.” The two report on barely-noticed cartoon nudity on Nickelodeon, before Sovani moves into her special segment covering the “Taylor Swift Scandal” (in which the singer’s cat scratches her leg for insurance purposes). Storey abruptly interrupts his co-anchor without apology and moves into his featured story about Comedy Central’s recent Justin Bieber roast

The Desk joins Uproxx’s first web series, Luminaries, which debuted in January 2015 after Woven raised $18 million in funding to produce new content. That series focuses on young millennial scientists and inventors using technology to improve the world around them. According to a company release, Luminaries already has about 8.4 million views.

“UPROXX is known for curating the best of what is on the web. With Luminaries and now The Desk, we are moving to the next level through the creation of original, compelling content,” said Benjamin Blank, Show Creator for The Desk and Chief Creative Officer at Woven. “We are excited to explore the world of shareable moments in a comedic tone with The Desk.”

You can check out episodes of The Desk on Uproxx.com as they are released each day.
