CGP Grey Analyzes Tolkien’s Mythos To Greet ‘Hobbit’ Sequel

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies arrives in theaters on December 17th, and in order to greet the film’s debut, YouTuber CGP Grey has jumped into action. The educator, who has more than 1.5 million subscribers, has released a video detailing the mythology behind the Lord of the Rings universe.

Grey’s video talks about wizards (who are not actually wizards, per se), Valar, Maiar, and a lot of other fantastically-named LOTR subsets. This sounds boring, but credit Grey’s skills as a writer and editor for making the four-minute video worth watching.

If you’re still confused, Stephen Colbert can fill in the gaps for you. Unfortunately, he seems to be busy with Hobbit videos of his own.

There are plenty of other channels offering up their own Hobbit-y videos; take, for example, this Hobbit/Frozen mash-up from Nerdist. As per usual, many creators are eager to put their spin on the latest blockbuster movie–even if this one has only received so-so reviews.
