Rock The Vote Uses Lil Jon, Lena Dunham, Crazies To Reach Young Voters

While individual YouTubers are encouraging their fans to exercise voting rights, Rock the Vote has a whole different way of approaching the subject. Its new #CareLikeCrazy campaign features six video ads of eligible voters whose opinions are so extreme they’ll convince young adults to get out and vote.

Each ad contains a caricature of some type of radical person who will butt heads and opinions with young voters. In one video, a privileged white male in the arms-manufacturing industry discusses how important voting is to him so he can support a candidate who “isn’t afraid of a little war” and so the bombs can keep funding his lake house. Another female voter golfing at a country club claims she supports more laws to keep the “riff-raff” and inexperienced young kids out of the voting system.

While the ads are fictional, they’re presenting real-life stances many voters take. Rock the Vote’s whole point is to make young adults aware of the need to vote, especially if they disagree with any of the character’s beliefs presented in the videos.

In addition to the #CareLikeCrazy ads, Rock the Vote also teamed up with Lil Jon and Lena Dunham to make an extreme music video about voting called #TURNOUTFORWHAT. It shows Lil Jon going to vote for the November 4 mid-term elections, where he runs into Lena Dunham in a voting booth. The video then plays a rendition of the singer’s “Turn Out For What,” with snippets from various voters declaring what they are “turning out” to vote for, like education, prison reform, and marijuana (yes, that’d be Lil Jon).

Rock the Vote’s videos may be unconventional and intense, but they’re bound to spark action in young adults who would otherwise stay at home this coming election season.
