Less than two weeks after Yahoo announced it would pick up NBC’s Community for a sixth season (and fingers crossed for a movie), news broke the multinational internet corporation may resurrect another cancelled cult favorite from television.
Deadline first reported Yahoo is eyeing Fox’s Enlisted and in preliminary talks with producer 20th Century Fox TV for a second season of the single-camera comedy exclusive to Yahoo Screen.
Like Community, Enlisted has an ardent fan base capable of causing a lot of racket online. One individual in particular, Army Veteran Nick Palmisciano, posted a video in May 2014 that ramped up the rallying cry for Fox to bring Enlisted back. After all, hadn’t Family Guy, Arrested Development, and 24 seen second lives on television and on other mediums? And weren’t the ratings for Enlisted seriously skewed because the show aired during one of the worst possible time slots on Friday nights? Here’s Palmisciano with those questions, arguments, and more:
The target of Palmisciano and his peers’ pleas soon shifted, however, from Fox to Yahoo after the news about Community’s sixth season hit the trades. As The Wrap reported, a very strong and loyal following of individuals with a yearning for some kind of a non-fiction series with a military bent took action. Tweets like “RT this if you would watch a #Community #Enlisted Double Feature on @YahooScreen” started to flow onto Twitter streams. And, though no deals have been made just yet, it all just may have worked.
For Yahoo’s part, the internet company is quickly trying to establish Yahoo Screen as a go-to online video destination. That’s where the next season of Community will live, alongside 365 days’ worth of live concerts from top-tier acts and other premium online video products.
