I’d Like To Thank The Academy For Its New Original Web Series

We’re still several months away from the unofficial commencement of Oscar season, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is determined is making an early appearance in the public consciousness. The body that votes on the Academy Awards has launched Academy Originals, a new web series about the art of filmmaking.

The Academy kicked off its series with three varied features. In “Let’s Go To The Movies“, Patton Oswalt geeks out while perusing the Academy’s collection of old film reels. “Creative Spark” goes inside the process of screenwriter Tina Gordon Chism (best known for films like Drumline and Peeples). The most enlightening of the three episodes is “Not Much To See“, a short featurette that explains how the blind watch movies.

The Academy’s series will leverage the group’s members–a group that includes more than 6,000 moviemaking professionals–and its huge archive of classic film footage. “Our membership represents the most creative minds and talented storytellers in the world – professionals with incredible expertise to share,” said Josh Spector, the Academy’s managing director of digital media and marketing. “Academy Originals will serve as a platform to share that perspective with the world and to tell stories nobody else is telling.”

New episodes of Academy Originals will launch each Monday.
