Must-Watch Music Videos: Sleepy Tom’s ‘Currency’ Exposes Wall Street

[Editor’s Note: Two major trends have emerged in the recent history of new media: 1) Music videos are the new music and 2) YouTube is the new MTV. With that in mind and to keep you up to speed with the greatest and latest in this online video category, Tubefilter has partnered with INDMUSIC, YouTube’s largest independent music network, to bring you at least one must-watch music video every week. Sleepy Tom’s latest release is “The Currency.” It’s a mind-bending short film of a music video that personifies Wall Street corporate excess. But don’t worry, it’s not too heady or preachy. And If you liked The Wolf of Wall Street, or better yet The Wolf of Buzzfeed, then this clip will serve as the perfect companion to both.

It begins as an off-kilter documentary, which then takes a dark turn as the music ticks up and the beat drops  This is the corporate party to end them all, the last hurrah before the big “Black Monday” crash of 1987, and what comes next is one of those legendary nights these guys will end up recapping to their court-mandated AA groups in a matter of months.

According to Rolling Stone, “The Currency” originally featured vocals. Once those were dumped, the video was shot to help hammer home the intensity of the track. There is a definite tension in the beat that I would argue hardly needs visuals to help get your heart rate up and your feet moving. But paired with the insane clip, it’s enough to make you need to take a break from whatever it is you’re doing and go return some videotapes.

Sleepy Tom’s debut EP, also named “The Currency,” was released last year on Brooklyn’s Fool’s Gold Records. Make sure you pick up a copy even if your next party isn’t a drug-addled Wall-Street bro-fest. Keep up on all of Sleepy Tom’s content by subscribing and see if you can spot his cameo partying in “The Currency.”
