While Xbox still works to bring its Steven Spielberg live-action Halo series to consoles and Netflix and Disney start to spend hundreds of millions to bring Marvel‘s junior varsity superheroes to live-action life, Playstation announced its getting an original sci-fi superhero series of its own.
Sony’s video game console announced it now has the exclusive on the hourlong drama Powers, a superhero fantasy story with a crime noir and police procedural twist based on the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming that was first published by Image, but now is put out under Marvel’s Icon imprint.
Playstation reportedly ordered 10 episodes of the series, which “follows Detective Christian Walker, who is in charge of protecting humans like us and investigating cases involving the God-like men and women, referred to as ‘powers,’ who glide through the sky on lightning bolts and fire and who clash above cities in epic battle, oblivious to the mortals below.”
Powers was once on its way to be an FX original series after the Fox cable network ordered a pilot in 2011, but the the program was never given the greenlight to television. The Playstation iteration is produced by Sony Pictures TV, with Charlie Huston penning a new script and Circle of Confusion (which also produces AMC’s incredibly popular live-action adaptation of The Walking Dead), Remi Aubuchon, Bendis, and Oeming on board to executive produce.
