Far East Movement, the hip hop group best known for its incredibly catchy 2010 smash hit, ‘Like a G6‘, recently rolled out a new music video. However, unlike most artists signed to a major(Interscope, in their case), the group did not choose to distribute its work via VEVO. Instead, Far East Movement has dropped ‘The Illest‘ on Maker Music, and a bunch of Maker Studios creators show up in brief cameos.
‘The Illest’ features the members of Far East Movement getting down in an office, where they are later joined by the office’s employees and some other special guests. Unpredictable rapper Riff Raff‘ drops a verse in the song, and the list of Maker creators who make cameos includes Nice Peter, Watsky, Rawn, Steve Greene, and Jeffree Star, among many, many others. Before you watch it, be warned: this video is very ill. Don’t watch too closely, lest you come down with the flu.
Far East Movement’s distribution choice is a unique one that fits the collective well. Many major artists would have little interest in distributing on a channel where they would be separated from their personal fanbases, but for a group like Far East Movement looking to get back in the spotlight after a few years away, it’s a risk worth taking. The presence of Maker stars adds in a collaborative element capable of attracting new viewers, and the group’s previous fans can still be directed to the proper location.
If this becomes a trend, it will be similar to the movie trailers that have seen distribution via channels like Machinima and IGN. Maker Music will always be an alternative choice, but if its videos will normally feature its creators acting ridiculous, I sure hope it becomes a common one.
