KassemG Becomes A Serious Actor In Picture Show’s ‘Wrecked’

We all know KassemG could do the funny, but did you know he could also do the serious? The Maker Studios co-founder has proved as much in Wrecked, a short film on The Picture Show, Maker and Tribeca Enterprises‘ joint YouTube channel.

Kassem is not the first Maker creator to lend his talents to The Picture Show, which also recently featured Alphacat in a Scary Movie edition of its Remix The Movies series. He does, however, give us a first taste of the general philosophy behind the channel, which seems to be intended as a platform through Maker talent can explore a more cinematic style of YouTubing.

In Wrecked, Kassem plays a fighter pilot who finds himself stranded in the desert after a crash, with only a disembodied voice to guide him. I don’t want to say too much, lest I give away the various twists, but let’s just say it doesn’t end how you’d think it would end.

All in all, Wrecked seems more like a vehicle for KassemG than an exhibition from the filmmakers who made it (Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, who previously made the Tribeca-distributed Resolution). It’s as if he’s say to viewers, ‘Look world, I’m not just that guy who makes jokes on the internet…I can act!’ He’s not entirely convincing in the sense that Wrecked feels like ‘KassemG trapped in the desert’ rather than ‘a lone fighter pilot trapped in the desert’, but he’s pretty darn good for a comedian. After a few more Picture Show Originals, I think he’ll really start to get the hang of it.
