It’s been a nice couple of months for James Rolfe, the Angry Video Game Nerd. His feature film, funded by a huge Indiegogo push he completed last year, remains in development and slated for a summertime release. His YouTube channel, long a complement to his personal Cinemassacre homepage, crossed a million subs. Now, he’s completing a rare web series/film/gaming triple play by starring in an Angry Video Game Nerd video game.
The game, titled Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures, will follow Rolfe’s 8-bit sprite as he navigates a world of shambling monsters. He’ll be armed with at least one gun, which he will power with his signature rage. According to the game’s recently released teaser trailer, it will be available on Steam if enough people support it on Steam Greenlight. Judging from the size of the Nerd’s fanbase, that’s exactly what’s going to happen.
Fittingly, the game will be similar to the Nintendo Hard games that have helped Rolfe achieve his fame. One of the few details we know is that the three difficulty settings will be “easy”, “normal”, and “hard as balls”. AVGN Adventures could end up becoming the Battletoads of the current generation.
As with the AVGN movie, AVGN Adventures is slated for a 2013 release, which would make this a banner year for Rolfe. All we need now is a complementary game from his rival, the Nostalgia Critic. There are plenty of poorly-constructed movie villains out there who could use a butt-whoopin’, though Rolfe’s digital foes will also receive the comeuppance they deserve.
