Watch Animals Get Dissected With Disgusting, Fascinating ‘Brain Scoop’

Taxidermy and YouTube have been linked since Rhett and Link’s “Nope! Chuck Testa” video became a viral hit. Now, a new channel is turning some heads by showing viewers that creating lifelike mounts is not fun and games. Instead, Emily Graslie‘s The Brain Scoop gives us an engaging, disgusting, and oddly satisfying look into the gory world of animal preservation.

“First off, I’d like to apologize for the Grossometer apparently being inaccurate in the last episode,” lamented the upbeat Graslie in a recent installment of her Ask Emily Q&A series, “If I could go back, I’d probably bump it up a little bit, but you probably should be warned, if there’s ever a Grossometer…be wary.” Such a quote best characterizes The Brain Scoop. Graslie films herself as she takes apart various dead animal parts, with each episode ranging from mildly upsetting dead animal footage to absolute viscera-splattering mayhem.

Graslie’s main project has her taking apart a wolf carcass for examination and eventual display at the University of Montana’s Zoological Museum. In the most popular video on the channel, she dives right into the animal’s innards for an informative, exhilarating, and sufficiently gross exploratory adventure. If you have a weak stomach and you haven’t gotten the hint by now, let me state outright that this series is not for you.

The best part of the series, which has scored over a million views in just two months of existence, is Graslie’s consistently cheery demeanor, which helps ease the mood considerably. If Graslie is in good spirits about the dismemberment of her lupine subject, then we should be happy as well.

Brain Scoop‘s popularity is helped along by a little celebrity appeal. You see, Graslie is a grad student at University of Montana, which is in Missoula, which is the home of…wait a minute, that’s Hank Green‘s music! The more scientifically minded Vlogbrother is Brain Scoop‘s executive producer and occasional guest, and his 977,000 subscribers are just the sort of people who would be interesting in watching a wolf get dissected. Move over, Chuck Testa. There’s a new critter-carving sheriff in town.
