‘Easy Abby’, The Lesbian ‘Nurse Jackie’, Is Gunning For A Full Season

Director Wendi Jo Carlton made an impact in both the queer community and the Chicago media with her last film, Jessie and Jamie Are Not Together, which explores a fleeting lesbian romance in the Windy City. Now, Carlton is ready to distribute her next project for a different medium. She has created a web series called Easy Abby, another LGBT-oriented production (once again set in the Windy City). Though several episodes have already been completed, Carlton needs some help; she’s launched up an Indiegogo campaign to help finance the remaining eight episodes she wishes to shoot.

Easy Abby will dive into the life of its titular protagonist, a sex addict who can’t stop seeking out flings with other women. Carlton says of her show, “I like to think of this as lesbian Nurse Jackie, but instead of being addicted to the pain pills, she needs to have random sex to calm down and make herself feel better.”

The lure of Carlton’s directorial style stems in part from a more earnest portrayal of lesbians, especially when compared to more mainstream films such as The Kids Are Alright, which was savaged by some LGBT groups

for its inaccurate portrayal of the lesbian lifestyle. Jessie and Jamie Are Not Together is praised by its lone IMDB review for featuring queer gals who do not kill themselves, sleep with men, or worry about coming out, instead creating a honest portrait of two ladies figuring out how they feel about each other, with plenty of comedy along the way. Expect Easy Abby to appeal to viewers in a similar style, with the same sexual energy Jessie and Jamie had.

Easy Abby has the support of the LGBT community behind it, and is slated to appear on several channels when it is released, including the YouTube page of the series’ production company, Juicy Planet. However, the project still needs a little more funding before all 14 episodes can be wrapped. On the aforementioned Indiegogo campaign, Carlton hopes to raise $10,000 to help make her dream a reality. She has over $7,000 to go (and only eight days left) with plenty of Easy Abby merch to give away as a thank you gift, so if the “lesbian Nurse Jackie” sounds like a good premise to you, go ahead and lend your support.
