That something is Married On MySpace, the new reality web series from social networking juggernaut MySpace and Endemol USA, the TV studio behind NBC’s Fear Factor, Deal or No Deal, and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, among others.
Married On MySpace debuted on May 14th with its first episode (above), “And the Winner Is…“, which introduced the three final couples (which had been chosen via MySpace poll before the show began), flew them out to New York, and sent two of them home while the third got to stay and start planning their wedding – on MySpace’s tab, of course. However, there’s a catch; while Anja Winikka from TheKnot.com is the wedding planner for the show, the details are left up to the voting public.
In the first episode, it was revealed that the poll of the week is on the wedding ring; the bride made her vote clear, of course, but it’s ultimately up to anyone willing to click the button. Right now, it looks like each episode will last about eight minutes, and they come out every Thursday 12PM Pacific, running for 13 episodes total and ending with a live ceremony.
Part of me wants to say they’ve got it easy since they don’t have to worry about a budget, but planning a wedding ceremony is hard enough without having to worry about the opinions of a few million anonymous — oops, did I say Anonymous? — viewers. After reading about the recent TIME 100 Poll, I don’t think I’d want my wedding on Married On MySpace. However, that won’t stop me from watching, and it probably won’t stop you, either.
