'Weeds' Star Moves to Web

Celebs and TV stars jumping from the small screen to the even smaller one is nothing new. These days, you can view every major TV show on the internet (well, almost every major TV show), and big-name artists from Coolio to Damon Wayans to Will Ferrell have all nestled into their own comfy corners on the web. Daisy Whitney says it’s for the freedom, and it is, but I sense the strengthening scent of big opportunity.

With a looming actor’s strike, those with the power to draw an audience on any medium might just try to re-assert their power and “make sand castles at a new sandbox…

Then again, sometimes actors are written off a series, and what better way to get a new role than to make one up?

Former Weeds’ star, Romany Malco, who’s time on the hit Showtime original series has expired for reasons unknown, has moved on to smaller and better things. He’s developing a character named “Tijuana Jackson, a former convict living under

house arrest” who makes a deal to stay out of prison by promising to support the three women (prostitutes) living with him. The webshow will be released in weekly installments on YouTube, Entertainment Weekly reports.

It’s a smart tactic in an age where traction speaks louder than polished concept, but I hope for Malco’s sake that he’s got some good writers aboard because, so far, I’m not too compelled. Then again, the guy IS capable of flow like this:

If he can sustain that level of entertainment through his own series, I’ll be watching.

The development also makes me stop and think, as the threat of an the actor’s strike looms larger, will we see many similar announcements in the coming weeks?
