A catfight between two self-righteous, award-offering organizations –The National Academy of Arts & Sciences and Academy of TV Arts & Sciences– recently ensued over how and when to award Broadband Emmys. Despite the law suit, the Emmy Awards recently announced nominees for news and documentary programming made specifically for broadband.
As far as I’m concerned, this is an argument over semantics. The Emmys needn’t even make a distinction between television distributed on the internet and television distributed by traditional methods. Why can’t these broadband offerings be nominated alongside their traditional-TV brethren? After all, the line between the two is fading fast.
We’re happy to see that ‘new TV’ has gotten some recognition, though I should note, the Emmys arrived to the scene a bit late.
As I peruse the list of nominees, I can’t help but notice a disproportionate number of ties to established media companies. Does this really represent the best of non-fiction TV on the web…or some of the best-connected?
