Several years ago, filmmaker Michael Ambs and cohorts Nick Ambs and Amanda Walker came up with the idea to create Pedal, a documentary about people who make the odd decision to embark upon cross-country biking trips across, well, the country and what made them come to make that odd decision. To jumpstart fanfare, prospective financiers, and aid later distribution, the team decided to create a preproduction blog and, finally, a production vlog, which started not too long ago.
The first few episodes were interesting. They were general preproduction pleas for support and for interesting characters to meet up with the crew along the route in a very Amanda Across America sort of way. But the fourth and fifth episodes are really spectacular.
The fourth episode gives you the brief but elaborate multi-year history behind the project. But, more than that, it also shows viewers the style of the filmmakers. This is heavily edited material with narrative sequences shot to enhance Mike Ambs’ cut-and-dry factoids as he tells his project’s story. It’s awesome and you should definitely check it out below. The fifth episode kicks off their bike trip from Washington to Maine along the American-Canadian border with some bacon and some chit chat, introducing characters and the voice of the documentary behind the documentary. This is definitely a show to watch.
