ABC's User-Generated TV show

ABC announced this week that one of its new shows for the summer will be a six-week experiment on user-generated content, specifically user-generated video news. But this isn’t for ABC.com. This is for ABC.

“i-Caught” will have a website where viewers can upload video news to be edited and aired on national television. It sounds like a combination of Rocketboom, Current TV, and Scriggity, but made and homogenized for national television. There’s only one show that has ever had this amount of emphasis on user-generated content and that’s “America’s Funniest Home Videos”, which doesn’t count.

This comes at a time when videos–most recently Rosie O’Donnell’s vlog message signaling her departure from “The View”–have made the rounds among national television news programs. It was only the other day that ABC aired a featured segment where they tracked down the two kids who appeared in a YouTube video where a bolt of lightning hit the ground five or six feet in front of them as they walked down a Dallas street. When the integration of internet news into television news gets that lame, it’s probably a good time for a new concept like this.

You can start uploading your video news on June 12 to i-caught.com, which is not yet online. The first episode of “i-Caught” will air Monday, August 6 at 8pm.
