Are you lovelorn? Depressed? Got dumped in an email from your girlfriend’s Blackberry?
We Need Girlfriends might be your best therapy. The series premiere opened with a couple moving into their new apartment after college graduation, helped by two friends. As Tom (Patrick Cohen), the boyfriend, comments to Lucy (Brigitte Hagerman), his girlfriend, how bad Henry and Rod’s luck has been lately, what with being dumped in the same week and all, it’s pretty clear what Lucy’s about to do when she looks back at Tom with a sympathetic wince.
Ragtag Productions‘ claims responsibility for the monthly show, which shares a playbill with their other film and video work like “It’s Fun to Help Poor People, Franny Canada” and “Teenage Superhero Pregnancy Scare,” which, it goes without saying, are some awesomely titled films. The group (which consists of writer Steven Tsapelas and directors Angel Acevedo and Brian Amyot) has made a fantastically funny online comedy show with We Need Girlfriends.
As they each decide that they can’t live in New York without having girlfriends, their mission to secure long-term relationships begin. And continue. And continue. Even though they try MySpace, Craigslist, and parties advertised online with evites, they fail at every possible turn to land girlfriends.
Although there are occasional one-offs like a special Valentine’s Day episode and a “Holiday Treat” episode, Ragtag’s set a 10-episode season. They’re currently at episode seven, with episode eight coming out on June 1. So you’ve got two and a half months to watch a couple five-minute episodes to catch up before the season finale, which I strongly encourage you to do.
