MySpace Adds Video

Speaking of the trendy fusion of merging video and social networking, MySpace announced plans yesterday to release video content from 15 big name producers that users can watch and utilize on their profiles.

Mediaweek reports that some of the producers offering content include animator Mike Shields (Beavis & Butthead), Vice, the New York Times, Ripe TV, Reuters, Daily Reel, Studio411, IGN, and the National Geographic Channel.

It hasn’t been announced what users will be capable of doing with this content and if any new features will arrive with the newly elevated focus on better video content, but the assumption is that they’ll be made easily accessible to embed on profiles and watch on MySpace Video like the rest of the video content that’s currently available on the site.

While this isn’t huge news for Reuters or even Vice, it’s definitely substantial for emergent online networks like Ripe TV, Daily Reel, and Studio411. I’m excited to see who else from new media has purchased space alongside old media giants like the New York Times.
