A New Show…from MySpace?

As online television gets more and more profitable, more and more interesting collaborations have sprouted. It was only a few weeks ago that the Lonelygirl15 creators inked a deal with Bebo, Europe’s MySpace, to create an exclusive series that’s set in the Lonelygirl15 universe with content that interacts with Bebo’s social networking site.

And now MySpace is not only announcing it’s own show for the site, but it’s a series created by Mark Burnett (“Survivor,” “The Apprentice,” “Rock Star”).

Their show, “Independent,” will utilize MySpace’s overflowing population to select an independent presidential candidate from ordinary MySpace users like you. User profiles will become the online version of campaign headquarters.

“Through this new network television series and the partnership of MySpace, we’re going to discover in a big way

what America really thinks, and bring to light the issues that are closest to those who now finally have a chance to be heard,” Burnett said. Essentially, it’s the MySpace version of CitizenTube.

Although the winner will receive a million dollars, the prize money can only be spent on a personal run for presidency or donated to a political cause or action committee. (Judging from the candidates’ varying amounts of friends, I’m going to throw my hat in the ring and guess that the money will end up in the Obama campaign.)

The show is still being hammered out and a traditional TV network has not yet signed onto the project, but it’s pretty exciting. Look for “Independent” in early 2008, when campaign season kicks into full force.
