Description: A Chicago-based web series is looking to bring a new meaning to the phrase “witch hunt.” Ricardo Gamboa is the primary creative force behind Brujos, which will center on four queer, Latino grad students who also happen to be witches.
With Brujos, Gamboa hopes to create a unique series by adding supernatural touches to traditional sitcom format. As evidenced by the show’s description, Brujos will have a heavy focus on representation, with a preponderance of queer characters and people of color among its cast.
The titular witches will go up against a group of hunters, who will be descended from American colonizers. Gamboa provided more details about the plot and the aesthetic he hopes to cultivate in the Brujos pitch video.
Creator Bio: Gamboa, born and raised in Chicago, has worked prolifically in both the Chicago and New York theater communities. His creations serve as his way to share his experience as an artist who is both Mexican-American and queer.
Best Perk: If you kick in at least $50, you will receive a package that includes the official Brujos t-shirt. As the perk’s description explains, “bad witches wear brujo.”
Why You Should Fund It: Brujos is going to be a smart show. Gamboa and his team clearly have big plans, and judging from their pitch, they want to create a product that will weave together historical context, critical theory, queer representation, and several other topics in one satisfying package. The result is likely to be a show that will give its viewers plenty of room to think.
That doesn’t mean, of course, that Brujos will skimp on the entertainment. Instead, the clips we’ve seen so far show off a project that is going to be just as funny as it will be thoughtful. Give it a look to see if its up your alley.
